All About Alaska

When I think of Alaska I think of a cold barren place with lots of ice and snow, and maybe some igloos. Apparently there is more to Alaska than I thought.

Located in the upper northwest region of the North American continent, Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area (larger than the combined area of the next 3 largest states: Texas, California, and Montana) and one of the wealthiest and most racially diverse. Go figure!

Alaska is actually quite a beautiful place with 17 of the top 20 highest peaks in the United States. The icy state also boasts natural wonders like the Yukon River, the third longest river in the U.S. and glaciers like Malaspina the largest in the state.

According to the official state website there are three big misconceptions about Alaska.

Weather is the #1 misconception. Over a third of all vacation/pleasure visitors found the weather better than expected. During the summer, average daytime temperatures throughout the state range from the 60s to the 90s.

Road conditions are usually better than expected. Almost the entire length of the Alaska Highway is asphalt-surfaced, and approximately half of the roads in the state’s highway system are paved.

The third misconception is price. Contrary to popular belief, prices throughout Alaska are generally quite reasonable.

Who knew Alaska could be so pleasant? Next time, I take a vacation I just go to Alaska. It sure sounds a like a great place with plenty of natural wonders to take in.

The state of Vermont is a beautiful land of green pastoral farms, tall trees, rolling hills, and winding waterways. A 270-mile long path known as The Long Trail snakes along the backbone of the Green Mountains, making for excellent hiking and overnight camping excursions along the way. Speaking of camping, there are over 100 campgrounds in the state just waiting for visitors to roast marshmallows, tell ghost stories, and enjoy the scenery and wildlife. Visitors might even be lucky enough to spot a moose or the elusive gray fox. However, for those that prefer more deluxe accommodations, there are plenty of high-end lodges, hotels, and bed and breakfasts scattered throughout the state. And after a good night’s sleep, golfers will likely want to tee off in some of the most visually stunning golf courses in the East, designed by the likes of Jack Nicholaus and Robert Trent Jones. For those into higher impact sports, Vermont’s many waterways and lakes are perfect for kayaking, canoeing, sailboarding, scuba diving, fishing, or leisurely tube rides. But nature isn’t the only splendid attraction in Vermont. It’s also a great place for concerts that attract popular performers to its intimate, small venues. Vermont ski lodges and nearby clubs are also great places to catch both established and up and coming musicians. On a different note, Revolutionary War buffs will also love Hubbarton Battlefield and Bennington Battle Monument. And after all of the activities, don’t forget to wake up early, catch the sunrise, and have nice big stack of pancakes, with a healthy helping of pure Vermont maple syrup.
